Accidents and Fatalities:
YOUNG MAN DROWNED AT MOTUROA
MR. JAMES BULLOT, a young man who carried on business as a tinsmith in New Plymouth, was the unfortunate victim of a distressing drowing accident at Moturoa on Sunday. The young man, in company with a cousin, Alfred Bliss, of Nelson, was fishing on what is known as Schnapper Rock. He had, it would seem, just hooked a fish and was in the act of leaning forward in order to better land his prize when a wave swept over the rock and washed him into the sea. Being a good swimmer he breasted the water, and sang out to his companion to throw out a line. This was done, but in the meantime, Bullot, who had apparently been dashed against a rock or attacked with cramp, sank and was never seen to rise again. The rock was surrounded with water, and Bliss was unable to get off for some time to seek for other help. When the police were informed of the sad occurrence, Constable Lynd was sent to the scene, and every effort made to recover the body, but without success. The search was continued on Monday with the same result. Up to a late hour this afternoon the body had not been recovered.
