Sorry for taking so long away.
In the year that I have been having my sabbatical the Papers Past website, from which all of these transcribed entries are taken, has had a wonderful upgrade. They have added the ability to search many of the publications available on the website.
This makes my transcriptions of the New Zealander, Taranaki Herald, Te Aroha News and the Wanganui Herald redundant. Of my choices only the Inangahua Times remains, as yet, unavailable for searching.
I recommend you take a look here for the list of titles available through the new search engine. I also advise that you consider doing your own browsing of papers as well. The character recognition has vastly improved in the past year from truly appalling to very very good. However, fuzzy images will still occasionally produce fuzzy results. So, if you are pretty sure you should be finding entries, do the old fashioned thing and read the whole newspaper yourself.
What this means for NZ Newspaper Articles Blog is a re-evaluation of the usefulness of transcribing names from the as yet unavailable source material on Papers Past – at least until they finally have all issues searchable.
I hope everyone has at least been happy to have found out about the National Library’s wonderful work through this blog, and I wish you good luck with your research.
Cheers for now.
