Sorry for taking so long away.

In the year that I have been having my sabbatical the Papers Past website, from which all of these transcribed entries are taken, has had a wonderful upgrade. They have added the ability to search many of the publications available on the website.

This makes my transcriptions of the New Zealander, Taranaki Herald, Te Aroha News and the Wanganui Herald redundant. Of my choices only the Inangahua Times remains, as yet, unavailable for searching.

I recommend you take a look here for the list of titles available through the new search engine. I also advise that you consider doing your own browsing of papers as well. The character recognition has vastly improved in the past year from truly appalling to very very good. However, fuzzy images will still occasionally produce fuzzy results. So, if you are pretty sure you should be finding entries, do the old fashioned thing and read the whole newspaper yourself.

What this means for NZ Newspaper Articles Blog is a re-evaluation of the usefulness of transcribing names from the as yet unavailable source material on Papers Past – at least until they finally have all issues searchable.

I hope everyone has at least been happy to have found out about the National Library’s wonderful work through this blog, and I wish you good luck with your research.

Cheers for now.

This is just a quick note for those who subscribe to the NZ Newspaper Articles blog.

I am currently in the midst of getting to know the new addition to our family tree, and am therefore a bit short of time to continue regular transcriptions. On top of that, we are not currently at home due to major renovations.

This means there will be a little bit of a delay before a new entry appears. I hope that come November we will be back in our house and our new addition will have a somewhat settled routine.

I hope you will all stick with me until then, and will look forward to reading the new newspaper that I will be adding to the collection.

Local and General

In our report of the Ikamatua concert in yesterday’s issue, the young lady’s name, whose recital was so excellently rendered, was Miss Newell, and not Neville, as appeared in the report.

A press telegram, received this morning conveys the mournfull intelligence that Mr T.Phelps, formerly of this town, was accidentally killed at Palmerston North. He was in the act of stepping on to a train while the latter was in motion, and was precipitated under the wheels and killed instantaneously. In common with many others we express our great regret, for this shocking termination to a young and useful life. Mr T.Phelps was well-known in Reefton, having been a resident here almost from his infancy, and was for many years in the employ of Mr W.Roberts, farmer.

Other names mentioned in this section include:

TELEGRAMS

Wellington, July 31.
Mr McLean, who formerly represented Wellington, will contest the City at the general election.

To-day a Maori girl, aged about ten years, named Teuru Noahina, was severely burnt about the hands, face, neck and body, through her clothes catching fire. She was putting water into the boiler of a house occupied by a native chief named Mahupuka, one of whose tribe she belongs to, when her apron caught fire, and the girl rushing out of the house was soon enveloped in flames. Captain Russell, M.H.R., was passing at the time and promptly took off his overcoat and wrapped it around the girl, thus smothering the flames, and by his decisive action probably saved her life. She is progressing favourably.

While playing in the lower room attached to his mother’s residence, at the back of the Terrace school, Arthur Nancarrow, about eight years of age, sat down sharply againtt the window pane, which gave way, and he was precipitated a distance of some 30 feet on to the concrete path. The forepart of his head is greatly injured, the skull being badly fractured. His condition is serious, but hopes are entertained of his recovery.

Napier, This Day.
T.M.Tuffnell, accounant at the Timber Company’s Office, has disappeared, and nothing has been heard of him since Monday.
