This page is intended for those family historians who may be familiar with online research, but have not yet ventured into the world of the “blog“.
NZ Newspaper Articles may look just like any other webpage that you visit, but it isn’t. It is a blog.
To get the most out of your visit here means you will want to understand the structure and features of a blog.
The most important area of a blog is the sidebar. In that space on this blog you will see the titles Pages, Recent Posts, Categories and Archives. In addition, you will also see a search box.
The Pages are static, and generally contain the more ‘permanent’ items a blogger wants to share with the reader, such as this page of “How To…” information.
The Recent Posts are, as the name suggests, the most recent entries in the blog. Here at NZ Newspapers, this will be the last 5 entries.
Categories are used to organise the content for searching, and here I am using the Newspaper name for this. In addition I have chosen to display the number of entries associated with each newspaper – that’s the number in the brackets.
Archives is the section that holds all of the old entries. Blogs do this by month.
The Search box is probably the most useful tool on this blog. It searches the entire blog for whatever you enter into it. It will then display a list of entries where that word occurs. If you are searching for a specific name and aren’t interested in reading through each entry, this is the way to go about it.
And then there is the method of having this blog come to you, rather than you having to visit it. This is managed by the RSS Feed. I have provided a few automatic “add to Feed” buttons toward the bottom of the sidebar for your convenience.
If you don’t know too much about Feeds and Feed Readers, here are a couple of good articles about Feeds and Feed Readers. They are a bit “techy”, but hopefully accessible.
